Natalia Black is now a well established painter in Northern Ireland.
She was born and trained as an artist in Slovakia. I have rarely met a
young artist so intellectually resourced on international contemporary
art. She has shown for several years with the Mullan Gallery on the
Lisburn Road. ‘Holywood Evening’ is a very ‘personal’ work. Natalia
explained “The small panel of paint in the lower right corner with
symmetrical lines and straight edges was prompted by the tennis
court and
reflects a positive happy regular state of mind at the start of the
day in the company of a friend. As the day progressed the friendship
started to fall apart hence the large panel of fractured shapes which
appears to be sliding down the surface of the work.” In this painting
these panels are metaphors for contrasting states of mind, happiness
and unhappiness. That is what the girl said. Who am I to question the
hand, behind the brain, behind the lady who told me the above?
