A Modigliani painting ‘ La Belle Romaine’ was expected to make $40m dollars and it was knocked down just short of $70m dollars. That Sotheby sale in New York netted $227.6m compared to last year which settled at $181m dollars. Matisse’s large sculpture Nu de Dos 4 Etat made $48m dollars. The estimate was $25/35m dollars. International art dealer Larry Gagosian was the last hand still in the air. Christies raised $231.4m dollars as opposed to $65.7m last year.
