From armed negotiator to shaking hands with the Queen: fact not fiction

 

Martin McGuinness was armed when he met Crown Minister William Whitelaw in 1972 for secret IRA talks at Cheyne Walk in London.

 

A major row broke out among members of the delegation on their return from the London talks when Mc Guinness revealed he had travelled with a revolver in his pocket.
